What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 14 September 2022 · Last inspected 4 August 2022

Inspectors visited Bay Tree House, a residential home for up to 16 older people, including those living with dementia, in an adapted period building over two floors. Staff were described as dedicated, caring and well trained, with a positive, open culture and supportive management. Relatives said they were happy with the service and would recommend it, and people's nutritional and healthcare needs were met, with strong infection prevention and cleanliness.

Strengths noted
  • Staff were described as dedicated, committed and caring, and training was highlighted as producing staff with good values and skills.
  • The home was consistently clean, and COVID-19 risks had been assessed and well managed.
  • People were supported with choice and control in the least restrictive way, and relatives said they would recommend the home.
  • Management were supportive, people had confidence in them, and communication with people and relatives was good.
Areas to improve
  • Medicines management was not consistently safe or in line with good practice, which risked errors, and the quality monitoring system had not identified this.
  • Records did not show that Mental Capacity Act principles were consistently evidenced, and care plans did not reflect formal involvement of people or their legal decision-makers.
  • There were concerns that staffing levels might not be enough to manage an emergency such as a fire, and staff felt pressured.
