What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 28 November 2022 · Last inspected 31 October 2022

Inspectors rated Tamar House Nursing Home, which supports up to 21 older people and people living with dementia, as requires improvement. Residents described feeling safe and well cared for, with staff praised for being friendly, responsive and willing to chat. Meals, staffing levels, induction, training, complaints information and the management's approachability were all found to be in place.

Strengths noted
  • Residents said staff are caring, respond quickly to call bells and check in on them
  • Meals are freshly prepared on site and residents said they enjoyed the food and had plenty to eat and drink
  • Staffing levels, recruitment and induction were found to be sufficient, and staff received suitable training including dementia care
  • Care records were described as individualised, up to date and accessible, and staff said the management was approachable
Areas to improve
  • Some medicine records were inaccurate, and controlled medicines were not managed in line with legal requirements; the manager acted to audit and correct these
  • Air-filled pressure-relieving mattresses were not always set correctly, and there was no process for staff to check them; the manager introduced one straight away
  • There was no permanent daytime nurse, with agency cover leading to inconsistent medicines practice; a permanent nurse was due to start later
