What inspectors found

CQC: Good

Report published 4 May 2022 · Last inspected 5 April 2022

Inspectors found that the Whitley Bay home, which supports up to 23 people with mental health needs, offered a settled everyday life, with staff who had positive outlooks and a strong rapport with the people they support. Risks were assessed and managed, the environment was clean, and medicines and nutrition were handled well. Activities dropped during the pandemic, and most people were again going out into the community.

Strengths noted
  • Staff with positive outlooks supported people to follow their own interests, and people felt at home.
  • Risks to health and safety were assessed, reviewed and reduced, and safeguarding policies were clear and understood by staff, who worked openly with external partners.
  • The home was clean and safe, and ongoing refurbishment was improving infection prevention and giving people more choice.
  • Staff were recruited safely, received training specific to people's needs, and medicines were managed safely by suitably trained staff.
Areas to improve
  • Activities were reduced during the pandemic, and the registered manager plans to appoint an activities champion to help people plan their goals.
  • The registered manager needs to improve their knowledge of which incidents must be notified to CQC, and the report makes a recommendation on this.
