What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 27 April 2021 · Last inspected 9 February 2021

Inspectors visited in February 2021 after the Wirral NHS Infection Control Team raised concerns, and found serious infection control and COVID-19 failings that were corrected quickly once raised with the manager. A follow-up visit found problems with medication handling, record keeping and leadership, though staff recruitment, staffing levels and people's experience of the home were judged acceptable. The overall rating moved from good to requires improvement.

Strengths noted
  • Staff recruitment was found to be safe and staffing levels were sufficient to meet people's needs.
  • Relatives described staff as kind, caring and attentive, and people spoke positively about the home.
  • Infection control improvements were in place at the follow-up visit three days after the initial concerns.
Areas to improve
  • Medication management did not follow recognised good practice, and staff competency to give medication had not been properly assessed.
  • Care plans, risk guidance and daily records were not always up to date, detailed or clear enough to show what care people received.
  • Systems for monitoring quality and safety were not effective, and the manager's knowledge of best practice needed to improve.
