What inspectors found

CQC: Good

Report published 3 March 2020 · Last inspected 4 February 2020

Inspectors rated Westwold good, after a planned visit in February 2020 to a purpose-built home for 32 older people, many living with dementia. People described the building as generally clean and well kept, the food as enjoyable, and staff as kind, caring and attentive to individual preferences, with family contact encouraged and activities offered to reduce isolation. Inspectors found that staff supported people's choices and independence, and that leadership was approachable and person-centred.

Strengths noted
  • Staff treated people with kindness and compassion, maintained privacy and dignity, and understood individual life histories and preferences
  • Strong early-intervention approach to pressure wounds, with no residents having pressure wounds at the time of inspection
  • Good food and choice of alternatives, with people supported to eat and drink well
  • Leadership was seen as supportive and approachable, and feedback from people, relatives and staff was used to make improvements
Areas to improve
  • Two showers could potentially exceed safe temperatures, and some radiators posed a burn risk; the provider said these would be resolved immediately
  • Night staffing was slightly below the level the provider had assessed as necessary, which was increased on the inspector's advice
  • Recording of controlled drugs did not fully match best practice guidelines, and the registered manager said this would be addressed immediately
