What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 5 September 2022 · Last inspected 1 August 2022

Inspectors visited The Shrubbery in August 2022 as a focused review of safe and well-led care, after concerns about record keeping, safeguarding and oversight. The home provides personal care to older people, including those living with dementia, mental health needs or physical disabilities. The report found people were supported by safely recruited, inducted staff, that people described staff as caring, and that infection control measures, including testing and PPE use, were followed.

Strengths noted
  • Staff were recruited safely, received an induction and felt supported in their roles and able to raise concerns with management
  • People told inspectors that staff were caring
  • Infection prevention measures were followed, the home appeared clean and cleaning schedules were in place
  • People were supported to make choices and staff used the least restrictive approach, in line with their best interests
Areas to improve
  • Oversight audits did not always identify risks or put mitigating strategies in place, and some risks were not fully recorded or mitigated
  • Medicine records needed improvement, including missing reasons for 'as required' medicines and no record of prescribed thickener use to reduce choking risk
  • Care plans and risk assessments had missing information, and recording of completed mitigating strategies was inconsistent
