What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 17 June 2021 · Last inspected 13 May 2021

Inspectors visited Orchard Lodge in May 2021 and found the service had improved since its last inadequate rating. It cares for older adults, including people living with dementia or life-limiting conditions, and six people were living on the ground floor at the time. Staff were described as knowing how to safeguard people, consent and best-interests decisions were explored, and people were treated with kindness and involved in decisions about their care.

Strengths noted
  • Staff completed safeguarding training and know how to recognise and report concerns
  • Referrals to specialist health professionals were made, and health professionals reported the service was responsive to people's needs
  • People were shown kindness and respect and were involved in decisions about their care, which was individualised and person centred
  • The provider and a newly appointed manager had developed oversight of the service and its plans to improve
Areas to improve
  • Medicines were not always managed safely, with improvements needed to medication recording and administration protocols and to management oversight of this area
  • End of life care protocols needed review, guidance was not always available to staff, and further training was required
  • Some relatives felt communication from the provider was not consistent, particularly after the service was placed in special measures
