About

Dora Rose Care Home is run by MACC Care in the semi-rural village of Milford, near Stafford in Staffordshire, on the edge of Cannock Chase. The home is registered for up to 71 residents and provides residential, nursing, dementia and respite care. Its setting is leafy, and residents sometimes see fallow deer on the lawns or among the trees.

Each bedroom has an en-suite wet room and a call system, and residents are encouraged to bring personal belongings. Shared spaces include a café, gym, cinema, wellness suite and quiet lounge, and a first-floor dementia activity centre supports engagement. Large balconies and landscaped gardens, with a water feature, provide access to outdoor space. The Care Quality Commission rated the home Requires Improvement overall in its 2023 report. Its key-question grades were Good for effective, caring and responsive care, and Requires Improvement for safe care and well-led.

What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 9 March 2023 · Last inspected 22 December 2022

Inspectors found that everyday care for people in this residential and nursing home was generally managed well, with staff using protective equipment properly, completing infection prevention training, and being recruited safely. Relatives and staff said they felt confident in the manager and in how the provider works with others, and people were supported to make their own choices in the least restrictive way. The overall rating dropped from good to requires improvement because risk monitoring, care records and medicines management were not always kept safe and current.

Strengths noted
  • Staff use personal protective equipment effectively and have received infection prevention and control training
  • Enough staff are on duty to meet people's needs, and staff are recruited safely
  • People, relatives and staff feel confident raising concerns and believe they will be listened to
  • Relatives and staff have confidence in the manager and in the provider's partnership working
Areas to improve
  • Risks to people were not always managed or monitored safely
  • Gaps in care monitoring records and care documentation not kept up to date with people's changing needs
  • Medicines were not always effectively monitored or managed
