About

Creative Support - High Street is a six-bed home in Bedford, Bedfordshire, run by Creative Support Limited, a not-for-profit organisation. The organisation aims to promote independence, inclusion and wellbeing for people with care and support needs, working with those it supports, their families and partner agencies. The home is registered to support people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and physical disabilities.

The Care Quality Commission rated the home Requires Improvement overall in a report published in 2020, with the same grade for each of its five key areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The wider organisation also runs activities for the people it supports, including a creative mission competition and a creative collective.

What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 19 June 2020 · Last inspected 18 February 2020

Inspectors found that the six people living in this home received help with personal care, felt safe, and were supported kindly by staff who understood their individual needs. However, staffing levels were not sufficient to give people enough interaction, choice over activities, or time out of the home, and people had limited involvement in planning their care. The report also found that the building's outward appearance and some stored items did not reflect a care home setting.

Strengths noted
  • People said they felt safe and were happy living at the home.
  • Staff understood how to keep people safe, and people could reach health and social care professionals when needed.
  • Medicines were managed safely.
  • People had access to a varied diet and helped to prepare meals and clear up afterwards.
Areas to improve
  • Staffing levels were too low to promote social interaction, and people could only go out for around four hours a week with external support.
  • People's choice, control and consent were not consistently respected, and their involvement in care planning was limited.
  • Industrial waste bins and entrance signage at the front of the house did not reflect a care home, and some items were stored around the property.
