Care home top-up fees explained, 2026.

If the council funds care but the chosen home costs more than its agreed rate, someone may be asked to pay a "top-up". These are common — but there are firm rules about when they're allowed.

How top-ups work

The council must offer at least one suitable home with no top-up needed.
