About

Blossom View Respite Home in Sheffield offers short breaks for younger adults under 65 who have physical or learning disabilities. Run by Blossom Wellbeing Group, it has 10 registered beds. It gives people who stay there the chance to try new experiences, build skills and make friends, while their family carers rest.

Referrals usually come through social workers or Continuing Healthcare teams, and the funding body sets how many nights are allocated, which may sit within a wider care package. Once nights are confirmed, dates can be booked as far ahead as possible, and weekend stays are not restricted. The Care Quality Commission rated the home Good overall in 2023, with each of its five key questions also graded Good.

What inspectors found

CQC: Good

Report published 24 July 2023 · Last inspected 10 July 2023

Inspectors found that staff at this small respite and residential home for people with a learning disability and autistic people were kind, caring and protected people's privacy and dignity. Staff had the skills to understand people's individual communication methods and knew how to recognise and report abuse. The report said the building layout, especially a large communal lounge and dining area, made it harder to meet the complex needs of some people.

Strengths noted
  • Staff were kind and compassionate and respected people's privacy and dignity.
  • Staff understood people's individual communication styles and interacted well with them.
  • Staff were trained to recognise and report abuse and worked well with other agencies to do so.
  • Staff knew people well and supported their aspirations to live a quality life.
Areas to improve
  • The large communal lounge and dining area did not suit the varied and complex needs of some people.
  • The building's type and layout did not fully meet the expected standards of right support, right care and right culture.
