What inspectors found

CQC: Good

Report published 19 February 2020 · Last inspected 13 January 2020

Inspectors found that most people at this nursing and personal care home, many of whom live with dementia, were content with the care they received. Staff were described as keeping people safe, handling medicines correctly, and supporting choice, independence and dignity. People, relatives and staff spoke positively about the management team, and the home worked closely with community professionals.

Strengths noted
  • Medicines were managed safely and given as prescribed.
  • Staff knew how to protect people from avoidable harm, and the premises were clean with infection control guidelines followed.
  • Support for moving and transferring people, and for eating and drinking, had improved since the previous inspection, with staff acting with patience and respect.
  • Meals were well balanced and met people's dietary needs, and palliative care at the end of life was compassionate.
Areas to improve
  • Some gaps remained in staff knowledge and skills, particularly in positive support for people whose behaviour may challenge the service, and inspectors made a recommendation on this.
  • Staff had not had their overall work performance appraised for more than 12 months; the manager agreed to make appraisals routine.
  • The building was not particularly suited to people living with dementia, and most communal areas lacked easy-to-understand pictorial signage; the manager agreed to make improvements.
