What inspectors found

CQC: Requires improvement

Report published 29 August 2019 · Last inspected 1 August 2019

Inspectors found that Avery Lodge Residential Home, which cares for 14 older people with mental health needs, has made improvements since its last inspection, though some concerns remain and the service continues to be rated requires improvement. Staff were described as knowing people well, treating them with patience and respect, and supporting them to stay active and connected to the community. The home was described as a place where people said they were happy and where staff felt valued and supported.

Strengths noted
  • Staff know people's histories and build meaningful relationships with them, and people said staff listened and met their needs in the way they preferred.
  • People's dignity is maintained and they are encouraged to stay independent, including going out into the community and spending time in the garden.
  • Care plans are person-centred and detailed, and people's views and those of people important to them are sought in reviews.
  • Medicines are given as prescribed, there are enough staff, and the service works well with other professionals.
Areas to improve
  • Hot water temperatures that were above safe levels were not addressed until shortly after the inspection, and incidents and accidents are not formally analysed for trends.
  • Governance and quality monitoring need to develop so that actions have a real effect on quality and safety, rather than being a paper exercise.
  • Documentation of decisions about people's choice, control and best interests needs to be improved, and further refurbishment of the building is required.
