What inspectors found
CQC: Requires improvementReport published 14 December 2022 · Last inspected 14 November 2022
Inspectors found that Eastbourne Grange, a residential home for older people including those living with dementia, had seen rising care needs, with some residents at an advanced stage of dementia requiring more support. Staff experience was limited, and the registered manager was covering care tasks and medicines, which reduced the time available for checks and audits. Relatives spoke positively about the service and the care their family members received, and people said they liked the staff but wanted more consistency in who supported them.
- Relatives spoke positively about the service and the care their loved ones received.
- People said they liked the staff and responded well to those they knew and trusted.
- Inspectors found that people were supported to make choices and that staff acted in the least restrictive way, in line with the policies in place.
- The registered manager was working with the local authority on best interests meetings and capacity assessments, and consent recording was being improved.
- Safe recruitment checks were not consistently maintained, and there were not enough trained staff to give medicines as prescribed, with only one senior carer and the registered manager able to do so.
- Medicine audits and checks were not being completed, accidents and incidents were not monitored robustly, and infection prevention and control guidance was not followed, including the use of masks.
- Required environmental and safety checks, including water safety, fire safety and window restrictor servicing, were overdue, and fire response training and evacuation arrangements needed improvement.
